Episode Notes

Host: Welcome back to Education Unboxed, where we explore unconventional ways to empower today’s youth. Today, I’m joined by a powerhouse in the Caribbean beauty industry—Lexann McPhoy, Managing Director of NSI Guyana. Lexann, welcome to the show!

Lexann: Thanks for having me! I’m excited to share what we’ve been building in Guyana.

Host: Let’s dive in. Nail technology is now being taught in public secondary schools. That’s a huge shift. What sparked this collaboration with the Ministry of Education?

Lexann: It all started with a vision from Minister Priya Manickchand. She saw the need to expand technical education to include creative careers. The TVET Unit ran with it. We partnered to launch a nail technology programme that’s more than just polish—it’s about real-world, income-ready skills.

Host: You’re speaking my language—skills that actually translate into jobs. Tell me about the students. What’s happening on the ground?

Lexann: Right now, 30 students from six schools in Georgetown are in training. They’re learning proper hygiene, chemistry, application techniques, and branding. And they’re not using practice kits. They’re working with professional, MMA-free, and HEMA-free NSI systems—the same quality found in top salons.

Host: I love that you mentioned branding. This isn’t just about beauty—it’s about business.

Lexann: Exactly. We train them not just to do nails, but to think like professionals. We provide a “salon in a box”—a full kit to get them started. The goal is simple: by graduation, they should be able to earn, whether through employment or launching their own salon.

Host: That's powerful. And this is just the beginning, right? I heard CVQ certification is next?

Lexann: Yes! We’re laying the foundation for full Caribbean Vocational Qualification in Nail Technology. That means these students will leave school with regional certification—something they can take anywhere in the Caribbean.

Host: This is changing the game. It’s not every day you see a beauty programme with this kind of structure and potential.

Lexann: Absolutely. Nail tech is a billion-dollar industry. It’s chemistry. It’s artistry. It’s wellness. And for many young people—especially girls—it’s a path to independence.

Host: Let’s talk about that. You’ve trained professionals across Guyana and the Caribbean. What keeps you going?

Lexann: Seeing someone move from uncertainty to confidence. I’ve trained hundreds of professionals. Many now run their own salons. That transformation—from “Can I do this?” to “I own this”—that’s what drives me.

Host: So what’s next for NSI Guyana?

Lexann: We’re looking for more schools, communities, and partners. We also offer business opportunities for anyone ready to open their own salon. We provide the products, training, and support they need to thrive.

Host: Incredible. So where can our listeners learn more or connect with you?

Lexann: Visit us at 64 Hadfield Street, Stabroek, or WhatsApp me directly at +592-622-2822. We’re also online at lexannnsi.com. Let’s train and transform, together.

Host: You heard it here first. Nail tech isn’t just a trend—it’s a career path. Lexann, thank you for joining us and for pioneering this transformative work.
