Design That Fits: Creative, Why Choose Eco-Friendly & Budget-Smart Furniture

Episode Summary

Tariffs going into effect this month could increase imported furniture costs by 25 percent. Should you hit the brakes on your upcoming redecorating project? Industry experts in Los Angeles have another surprising solution.

Episode Notes

Thinking about updating your furniture? Maybe you should think again. Or buy a winning lottery ticket.

New tariffs on imported upholstered products came online this month and will be officially calculated starting mid-month. These increases come on top of already-high home furnishing prices, which hit 9.5 percent inflation in August, according to Business of Home.

Waiting it out isn't really an option, since furniture tariffs are scheduled to jump again in January 2026. But Juan Xiquin, owner of Joseph's Upholstery in Los Angeles, says there's another way.

A presidential proclamation that became effective October 1 will increase tariffs on imported upholstered products by 25 percent beginning October 14. Tariffs will eventually rise to 30 percent on January 1, 2026. This change will affect consumers who purchase furniture manufactured overseas, and has many looking toward domestic solutions.

Tariffs will apply to certain upholstered wooden products and seating like sofas, chairs, and sectionals. Imported lumber and timber will also be affected. Many countries are excluded from the new tariffs. They appear to target products made in China, which is not surprising, given the U.S.' $295 billion trade deficit with the nation, as of 2024.

Those who find the new pricing structure cost-prohibitive have other domestic options. They can work with design experts to create custom pieces that fit their spaces perfectly. Or they can re-upholster their existing pieces for a slightly more cost-effective option.

In either situation, a quality reupholstery company will offer design expertise and a wide variety of upholstery options. There's something for everyone, regardless of whether your furniture is classic or contemporary.

Reupholstering existing furniture puts less stress on your wallet, and less stress on the planet as well. Reupholstery extends the life of your furniture, keeping it out of the landfill. It's a sustainable option that makes even more sense in a time of tariffs and inflation, according to Joseph's, which has been creating custom furniture and reupholstering furniture for more than 20 years.

So whether you're trying to save time, money, or the planet, domestic, custom furniture projects just might be the right way to go. Waitlists will grow as tariffs start taking effect, so call now for the best selection of times and materials!
