Hot yoga is yoga performed in a deliberately heated environment, but that broad definition covers several styles and temperature ranges. Traditional Bikram yoga is one recognizable example, with a fixed sequence of twenty six postures and two breathing exercises. Other heated classes use different sequences, shorter sessions or flowing styles. Many commonly studied hot yoga conditions fall around ninety to one hundred five degrees Fahrenheit, often with moderate humidity, and those conditions already create a very different exercise environment from room temperature yoga. The first point for beginners is that the heat and the yoga should be considered separately. There is also an important difference between replacing fluid and forcing unusually large quantities of plain water. Published case reports describe severe hyponatremia, dangerously diluted blood sodium, after excessive water intake following hot yoga. In one reported case a first time participant drank about three and a half liters of water after a ninety minute class. A case report does not establish how often that happens, but it shows why more water is not automatically better. Drink to thirst, and after a long session with heavy sweating consider electrolyte replacement rather than plain water alone.
Beginners should also expect heat to change pacing. Standing up quickly feels different late in a class. Long holds become uncomfortable sooner. A pose that is routine in a cool room may need a shorter hold or a modification. Lightheadedness and dizziness are commonly reported in surveys of hot yoga participants. Those reports are self reported and do not determine a cause, but dizziness, nausea, unusual weakness, confusion, loss of coordination or feeling excessively hot are reasons to stop rather than continue through a sequence. Anyone with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, kidney disease, a previous heat illness, or a pregnancy should get medical clearance before starting.
