Episode Notes

Someone asks ChatGPT for the best accountant, dentist, software provider, contractor, or consultant in their area. A handful of businesses appear in the answer. Yours isn't one of them.

Until recently, that might not have seemed particularly important. Most businesses concentrated on Google rankings, maps, reviews, and social media because those were the places customers searched. But the way people discover businesses is expanding, and AI-generated recommendations are becoming another part of the journey.

That creates a new question for businesses: when customers ask AI for what you sell, does your company actually show up?

An AI visibility checker is designed to examine whether a brand appears in answers generated by AI platforms.

This is different from opening ChatGPT and typing your company name. If you specifically ask about your own business, you already know what you want the AI to find. Potential customers are more likely to ask broader questions such as "What's the best roofing company near me?" or "Which accounting firms are good for small businesses?"

Those are the searches that matter because the customer has not chosen a brand yet.

An AI visibility check can provide a starting point for understanding whether your company is appearing during that discovery process.

A strong Google position doesn't automatically tell you how visible a business is in an AI-generated answer.

Traditional search generally presents users with a selection of results to explore. AI assistants can instead synthesize information and respond directly, sometimes mentioning only a small selection of companies.

That means two businesses competing for the same customers could have very different experiences. One might have strong conventional search visibility but rarely appear in relevant AI recommendations. Another may repeatedly be mentioned when users ask for options.

This is where generative engine optimization comes into the picture. GEO focuses on making brands and their information easier for AI systems to discover, understand, cite, mention, and recommend.

Finding out whether ChatGPT "knows" your company isn't particularly useful on its own. The better test is whether it surfaces your business in response to realistic buying questions.

Think about the problems that bring customers to you.

A family lawyer might be interested in searches around divorce or custody representation. A software company could look at questions comparing tools for a particular task. A local plumber might want to know what appears when someone needs an emergency repair.

The wording matters because AI answers can change depending on the question being asked. Rather than thinking about visibility as a single yes-or-no result, businesses should consider how they appear across the topics and buying situations most relevant to their customers.

Finding your own brand is only half of an AI visibility audit. The businesses appearing instead can be equally informative.

If ChatGPT repeatedly mentions several competitors for a service but leaves your company out, that gives you something concrete to investigate.

Look at the businesses being surfaced and the information available about them online. Consider their websites, service pages, third-party mentions, business listings, reviews, and other sources that clearly establish who they are and what they offer.

Recent BrightLocal research into local AI citations reinforces why looking beyond a company's own website matters. Its analysis of one point nine million citations found AI local search drawing information from business profiles, major directories, industry-specific websites, and company websites rather than relying on one universal source.

One AI visibility check shouldn't be treated as a permanent score for your business.

AI-generated answers can vary, and the platforms themselves continue to change. A checker is most useful as a baseline: it can help establish where a business appears now, where it may be absent, and what deserves closer investigation.

As AI becomes another route consumers use to discover businesses, the important question is no longer simply "Where do I rank?"
