Letting a defined-risk spread ride into its final session can leave a trader holding unwanted stock overnight. This post walks through how ACondor closes every spread after 1:00 PM Eastern on expiration day and screens short legs for early assignment.
ACondor LLC, developer of an automated options trading platform for tastytrade accounts, has published details of the expiration day safeguards built into its exit engine. The rules are designed to remove one of the least discussed dangers in premium selling: a defined-risk spread that is allowed to ride into its final session and settles between the strikes. Details on the platform are available at https://acondor.com/
Why expiration day is the most dangerous session for a spread
An iron condor or vertical spread is sold as a defined-risk position. Every leg has a matching leg that caps the loss. That protection only holds while both legs are alive. On expiration day, if the underlying settles between the short strike and the long strike, the short option is in the money and gets assigned, while the long option expires worthless. The trader wakes up the next morning holding a naked stock position with full overnight exposure and a margin call waiting. This is known as pin risk, and it turns a capped trade into an uncapped one after the trader has already stopped watching it.
Rule zero: the expiry flatten
ACondor treats this scenario as the top priority in its deterministic exit state machine. On expiration day, once the clock passes 1:00 PM Eastern, the platform closes the entire position, every leg, regardless of profit or loss. Winners and losers get the same treatment. The delay until 1:00 PM is deliberate: the morning's time decay still accrues, and tastytrade closing fees are negligible, so buying back the spread costs far less than gambling on a clean worthless expiry. The flatten rule sits above the profit target, the delta defense, and every other exit in the priority table, so nothing can preempt it.
The one day early profit pull
A position that is already profitable within one day of expiry does not wait for the final session at all. The platform pulls it early rather than risking the last day of gamma for a few remaining cents of premium. The only exception is an earnings trade still holding for its report, which keeps its position through the announcement because the volatility collapse after the report is the entire point of that engine.
Watching for early assignment before expiry
Assignment does not always wait for expiration day. A short leg that is in the money can be exercised early, but only when it makes sense for the option holder to give up the remaining time value. ACondor therefore does not ask whether a leg is in the money. It measures how much extrinsic value is left. When a short leg is in the money and its extrinsic value falls to a configurable threshold, the platform closes the position before it can be called away. A second trigger covers dividends: a short call sitting inside the ex-dividend window whose dividend exceeds the call's remaining extrinsic value is pulled the same way, because a dividend capture is the classic reason a call gets exercised early.
Every close is logged
Each exit records which rule fired and the realized profit or loss, so an account holder can audit exactly why a spread was closed at 1:00 PM on a Friday instead of left to expire. Combined with the platform's circuit breakers, per-account risk limits, and its four trading engines for mechanical iron condors, earnings volatility crush, volatility contraction, and directional setups, the expiration safeguards complete a risk framework where no open position is ever left to chance in its final hours.
